The business was founded by Mike Hickman, who has worked tirelessly to grow the business organically to where it is today. Here’s a glimpse into our story, illustrating significant milestones:
2010
Our humble beginnings trace back to when Mike, while working as a consultant, envisioned a firm that would simplify complex financial processes for businesses. With this vision, he laid the foundation of Practical Business Solutions right from his spare bedroom.
2011
Our dedication to excellence didn’t go unnoticed. Within a year, our clientele grew significantly, prompting us to move to a more professional setting. We found our new home at Hewitt House in Orrell, marking our first significant milestone.
2016
With an aim to cater to niche markets, we introduced ‘Practical Sporting Solutions’. This specialized wing was created to assist sporting professionals in navigating the intricate world of tax and financial planning.
2020
A decade since our inception, our growth story reached another pivotal moment. To cater for our ever-increasing clientele, we moved to a larger office space and welcomed new team members. This move wasn’t just about the physical space; it was a testament to our commitment to adapt, grow, and serve our clients better.
2023
Practical Business Solutions merged with DNS Accountants, creating a dynamic partnership that strengthens our ability to provide top-tier services. This union signifies our dedication to enhancing our clients’ experience and expanding our capabilities as a unified entity.

When I started Practical Business Solutions in 2010, I was determined to break away from the ordinary and create something exceptional for our local businesses in Wigan and across the country. Our vision was to provide a level of service that went beyond the standard offerings of traditional accountancy firms.
